Amputations are only made when necessary. Usually, field amputations are extremities, like fingers or hands.
Field amputations should only be performed if the patient cannot be taken to a medical facility and is in life threatening danger if an amputation isn't performed.
It is preferrable to get a patient to a facility to properly determine if amputation is needed.
